Harvest Festival Fun at Acton Scott

September 25, 2011

So today we loaded up the nappy bag and headed out to Acton Scott working farm. We had never been there before so we had no idea what to expect. What we found was a little Victorian Farm full of exciting things to poke around at. Tim obviously found the toilet while Maddie-Ane and I admired the better smelling flowers.

After being chased by the geese (well they were looking at me) we found some cute piglets and calves in the farmyard. You would think living in the middle of farmland would make me immune to the charms of little animals but it doesn’t!

The highlight of the day was the Harvest service conducted by an agricultural pastor from the back of a decorated dray pulled by the most beautiful shire horse. The service consisted of giving and receiving at various points in the farm so for example at the fish ponds a fish was given and in return the children fed the fish. It was more than a little odd but actually quite sweet. It is nice to be thankful for the great things we have from time to time.

After the service there was a free harvest supper with bread and butter made on site as well as a variety of cakes. jams and honey. I cursed my diet.

I particularly like the passage of the service where we were counseled to tread softly on the earth that it might be there for our children and our children’s children.

On a beautiful day like today I can only hope it will be.
